If your dog seems to be feeling ill, you may need to take its temperature in order to determine whether or not it has a fever. Fortunately, taking the temperature of a dog is a relatively easy procedure. In addition, by learning how to properly take your pet’s temperature, you can give your veterinarian more complete information that will help him or her diagnose your pet.

Taking Your Dog’s Rectal Temperature

Most dogs do not like having their temperatures taken rectally, but it may be necessary. If so, you can successfully take its temperature by following these procedures:

o Get someone to assist you with holding your pet in place
o Use a substance such as KY jelly, petroleum jelly, or other lubricant with a water base to lubricate the thermometer
o Have your assistant hug the front of your dog’s body tightly in place
o Lift your dog’s tail and insert the thermometer into the rectum carefully and slowly
o Hold the thermometer in place once it is about one inch inside the rectum
o Keep the thermometer in place for two minutes when using a mercury thermometer or until it beeps if using a digital thermometer

Your pet’s temperature should be anywhere between 100.5 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit when taken rectally.

Taking Your Dog’s Ear Temperature

You can also take your pet’s temperature through its ear. The ear drum is actually a good place to acquire body temperature because it takes a measurement of the brain blood temperature. With the help of an ear thermometer, the infrared heat waves emitted from the area are measured.

When taking your pet’s temperature with an ear thermometer, be certain to insert the thermometer deep into the ear canal. It is also a good idea to use an ear thermometer that was specifically made for pets, as these thermometers have longer arms that make it possible to place the probe deep inside the ear.

It is a good idea to take both a rectal temperature and an ear temperature the first few times you use an ear thermometer. This way, you can compare the temperatures and see how closely the readings compare. A normal ear temperature is anywhere between 100 and 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

When to Contact the Vet

Any time a pet’s temperature falls below 99 degrees or rises above 104 degrees Fahrenheit, you should contact your veterinarian. If your dog has a high temperature, it is a sign that it is suffering from an infection or an illness related to heat. A low temperature, on the other hand, can indicate shock or other serious illness.

If your dog is showing any of the following signs, you should take its temperature and contact your veterinarian if it is out of the normal range:

o Lethargy
o Eating and drinking less than usual
o General behavior change, particularly acting “cranky”
o The appearance of lumps or swelling
o Hiding
o Draining wounds

When you contact your veterinarian, he or she will likely run some blood tests in order to better pinpoint the problem and provide your pet with the proper treatment.

Since its discovery in the early nineteenth century, infrared light gave birth to a plethora of different applications, particularly in imaging technology. Nowadays, infrared camera applications vary from aerial archaeology and quarantine operations to predictive maintenance and night vision. Infrared technology has been proven to be effective in generating important data to help decision makers choose the best option to take.

Aerial Archaeology

This is the study of ancient remains of a given place by taking infrared images from a certain altitude to generate data which may prove to be useful to archaeologists. IR image from a given altitude help gain a better appreciation of other fine details which may have been missed when they were doing their examinations on the ground. Because infrared cameras primarily search for heat signatures of a given area and not the colors, archaeologists would be able to determine which area to physically examine first.

Quarantine Operations

During H1N1 outbreak, visitors from other places are routinely monitored for any signs of carrying the diseases. Since it would be almost physically impossible to check the temperatures of visitors one by one using conventional thermometers, medical authorities turned to infrared imaging technology. Infrared cameras were placed at strategic points where it would be able to capture the thermal signatures of newly disembarked visitors. Medical authorities then try to interpret the images and the heat signature captured by the Infrared camera then determines whether a visitor is a candidate for quarantine procedures.

Predictive Maintenance

Predictive maintenance is a process by which technicians gauges the internal condition of an equipment in order to determine whether maintenance should already be performed. This procedure often saves a company a lot of money when compared to time-based maintenance schedule because the tasks to be performed are done only when there is a need to do so. Technicians use infrared imaging technology to help them gauge whether maintenance is needed. Infrared cameras give the technicians a clear picture of what is happening inside the machine, whether the gears are still okay or if it is already worn out.

Night Vision

Perhaps one of the most popular uses of infrared technology, night vision cameras utilize IR illumination for the viewer to be able to see in the dark. The image that is returned by the night vision camera with infrared technology is usually monochromatic but would clearly show the full image of a darkened area. This application is normally used as security cameras in sensitive areas and by soldiers during nighttime operations.

Any responsible owner knows that the temperature for leopard geckos is very important. Leopard geckos need a warm area in their tanks of about 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and a temperature gradient down to about 80 degrees Fahrenheit in another part of their tank. It’s simply not acceptable for a leopard gecko owner to not cater for the needs their pet in this regard.

Providing a heat source in a leo’s tank is not difficult – a reflector lamp, heat pad or flexible heat tape will do an admirable job. What’s not so easy is ensuring that the heat source you have is producing the right amount of heat. Too little and your leo will be sluggish, sick and unhappy; too much and it’ll get overheated or could even get burned.

What you need, then, is a way of measuring the heat that your heat source is putting out so that you can then regulate it appropriately (the regulation part can normally be taken care of with a simple plug-in dimmer switch). Below are some of the options for measuring temperature. Keep in mind that what needs to be measured is the temperature of the substrate that your leo is walking around on and not the temperature of the air near it – this is an important distinction.

Ordinary aquarium thermometers

Aquarium mercury-type thermometers are robust and accurate. They come with a stainless steel mount and it’s easy to fix a couple of them in your leo’s tank. However, the potential hazard to using mercury aquarium thermometers is that they need to be touching the surface of the substrate. If they’re not touching the substrate then they’ll be measuring air temperature, not surface temperature.

Remote digital sensor units

This type of device is essentially a digital thermometer with a probe on the end of a wire. Stick the probe into the substrate, fix the readout somewhere you can see it (it’ll have suction caps), and voila – accurate and constantly-updated substrate temperatures.

Infrared temperature guns

A temperature gun is a thermometer, but quite a different one. You ‘aim’ it at something and press a button, and it fires an infrared cone that bounces back to the unit and gives you a temperature reading of that surface without needing to make contact with it. The best thing about a temp gun is that it accurately tells you the surface temperature of whatever you point it at, not the air temperature near it like normal thermometers can.

Herpstats

With most ways of measuring temperature you end up with a manual two-stage process: first measure the temperature; then adjust the heating device accordingly using a dimmer switch. Herpstats are great, because what they do is measure the temperature with a probe, then adjust the power that’s going to the heating device automatically until the temperature matches the one you punch into the herpstat. This is definitely the five-star option!

So, as you can see there are different ways to measure the temperature for leopard geckos depending on your budget and your preferences.

Every household with young children should possess a clinical thermometer. Young children, especially babies and infants, cannot properly describe their symptoms when they become ill. Many childhood diseases are associated with a raised temperature, sometimes inadequately described as a ‘fever’.

The term ‘fever‘ means different things to different people and I prefer to refer to a ‘raised temperature‘. Serious diseases such as encephalitis and viral and bacterial meningitis start off with fairly simple symptoms. Take measles, for examples. Measles can kill young children, and if it does not, can leave them with serious side-effects or complications such as hearing and visual defects, learning difficulties and brain damage.

The initial symptoms of measles are similar to those of a cold. A runny nose, a bit of a sniffle, a cough and eventually a sore throat. Temperature also rises to over 38 Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit). If you think that your child has measles, or if temperatures stays at or goes over 38 Celsius, you should inform your doctor immediately.

If you do not have a clinical thermometer, you cannot determine the child’s temperature! You may notice your child becoming a bit flushed, and may feel warmer than normal to the touch. However, it is far better to be able to measure this accurately. With measles, the temperature starts to drop after a day or two, then increases again as the spots appear and go as high as 40C (104F). You should definitely have contacted a doctor by then, but if you have no thermometer you may not have noticed the increase in temperature.

In many cases the temperature increase is the only indication that your child has more than just a cough and a runny nose. There are various types of thermometer available suitable for children. The old glass type with the kink is not recommended for young children. Digital thermometers are better, though disposable ones in the form of plastics strips with temperature sensitive dots are very useful. One side is self adhesive to stick to the skin under the armpit and the dots change colour at different temperatures. They can be used while the child is asleep and are disposable or re-usable for a certain period of time.

An alternative safe method to this is the ear thermometer which measures the infrared heat emission from the eardrum. An infrared probe is inserted into the ear and the temperature measured. This is safe because the probe is too short to reach the eardrum, and is larger than an infants ear canal. This is the type of system employed in hospitals, and is available for purchase either online or from good pharmacies for from around £30 ($50). Forehead thermometers are also available, and traditional glass rectal thermometers can be used with infants by trained staff.

The second part of this article will give more detail on thermometer types and how they are used, and also discuss ‘normal’ body temperature and its natural fluctuations.

Peter Nisbet is an industrial research chemist who runs two health-related websites. He became interested in childhood diseases after his son contracted encephalitis and bacterial meningitis in infancy which left him deaf in one ear and with other problems associated with coordination.

His website http://www.childhood-diseases-online.com deals specifically with children’s health as opposed to his general health site http://www.welshhealth.com

Remember when you had to “open wide” and sit with a glass tube sticking out from under your tongue for 5 minutes in order for your temperature to be taken – (I hope they remembered to wash it from the last sick person that had it under their tongue). What a carry on that was. It’s ok, those days are long gone, because the fantastic Exergen Temporal Thermometer can take an accurate temperature reading by simply being passed across your forehead – now doesn’t that sound more like it?

The first Exergen Temporal Thermometers were produced in 1999 and have proved to be very accurate, as well as causing much less distress or discomfort among patients, and Exergen Temporal Thermometer also produces much faster results. They are even self-disinfecting, how clever is that?

Other types of thermometer which can take a reading without being stuck in your mouth are a Forehead Thermometer. There are basically two types of Forehead Thermometers, the Exergen Temporal Thermometer (see above) and a strip type Forehead Thermometer which is the cheaper option. They are very handy to have in the home for babies, small children and the elderly.

Other types of modern, clever thermometers include Digital Infrared Thermometers. They have proved to be extremely useful in the home, in industry, the military and law enforcement agencies even have them, they can accurately measure temperatures from a distance away – the distance is determined by the D/S rating of each individual Digital Infrared Thermometer.

Handheld Infrared Thermometers are great fun! Of course they are useful in all sorts of situations too, mechanics use them, restaurants use them to measure the temperature of the food, scientists find them helpful, they’re good for education and, as I’ve already said, they can be great fun. If you get your hands on a Handheld Infrared Thermometer you’ll even be able to tell whether your food is hot enough, or which coat is the warmest! Infrared thermometers really have come a long way in a relatively short amount of time.

Top dog in the kitchen is probably the Taylor Thermometer. They’ve been making thermometers since the 1800s so they’ve certainly had enough practice. Taylor Thermometers are used in ovens, freezers, deep-fryers, in fact, all over the kitchen. They can even tell you whether your wine is at the optimum temperature – a very important piece of information I’m sure you’ll agree.

Using an Exergen Temporal Thermometer is so much better than having to “open wide”. The Digital infrared thermometer has also made a big impression in many different situations.

Infrared thermometers are instruments which have become an integral part of every household as well as industry sector. As a temperature gauging instrument its accuracy is indubitable. For this accuracy and reliability, it finds application in many areas like food industry, in household applications, in the medical industry, in HVAC maintenance, and in industrial processes among many others.

However, it is also essential to take proper care of infrared thermo meters for longer shelf life and greater accuracy. Here are a few tips for you to maintain your valuable tool.

• Taking care of the batteries: Always make sure that the infrared thermo meters have enough backup batteries for better functionality. Also make sure that you are using a new good quality alkaline battery. If you are replacing them make sure to check the polarity on your batteries. Install only as per the diagrams in the battery compartment.

• Keep moisture at bay: Regular exposure to moisture is very essential for proper maintenance of your temperature gauging equipment. Always, place infrared thermometers in a moisture free zone, so that it doesn’t ruin and mold the screen. This may lead to malfunction or damage beyond repair.

• Get it repaired only from manufacturers: If in case the infrared thermometers need repairing, always go to its rightful manufacturer. Getting it done locally may result in further damage that may be irreparable forever.

• For cleaning, use only branded products: Always follow the instructions given in the product’s manual guide while cleaning infrared thermometers. It is recommended that you use branded products. Go for compressed air (in an aerosol can); a soft rag; Endust for Electronics, or any non-abrasive household cleaning fluid suitable for cleaning plastic. You may spray a small amount of fluid onto a rag and go for cleaning.

These maintenance instructions for infrared thermometers are not exhaustive; still they go a long way to get optimal results from your non-contact temperature gauging tool.

Actron CP7875 is The Most Handy PocketTherm Infrared Thermometer

The size of The Actron Pocket Thermometer is very handy. On top of the device there is the infrared lazer and at the bottom is the battery compartment. It has two buttons. The large button is to see the temperature while the small button is to switch the temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

In our testing, these PocketTherm infrared thermometers measure the temperature accurately and has a quick response. When used continuously the Actron CP7875 has the ability to operate for more than thirty hours. While the most practical use of this thermometer gadget is its ability to measure surfaces temperatures of hazardous, hot, and hard to reach objects.

Actron CP7875 can measure temperature ranges from -27º to 428º F or -33º to 220º C. When buying the package it also includes a replacable battery.

After doing a lot of web research on infrared thermometers. The Actron CP7875 has relatively the lowest price and rated accurate enough (+/-2%). There are also other Pocket Thermometers that use laser but the downside for this type of device is you must keep it in a safe place out of the reach of your children. While the Infrared Thermometer like Actron is safer.

The size of the Actron CP7875 is smaller than you may have expected which is good, the length is less than four inches. It comes with CR2032 lithium watch battery installed. It’s very easy to utilise with auto backlight. It also has accurate measurements and display the result quickly, it can read about two or three times per second and then display the current and highest temperature. When you release the button, the display will hold the temperature until the next time you press again or It shuts off after 15 seconds.

Cons: The slight downside of The Actron CP7875 digital infrared thermometers are the 1:1 distance-to-spot ratio. It means to measure a small place or surface you should hold the Actron really close. Others have ratios of 6:1 to 10:1 meaning that if you want to measure a one inch circle you can measure it from the distance of six inches (6:1) or ten inches (10:1). The small button to switch Farenheit to Celcius or otherwise is too small and requires a pen, fork, or other small things to push it. If you plan to stick the measurement on Celcius or Farenheit only that will be no problem.

Pros: Very small, least expensive, easy to read backlit display, intuitive one-button operation. Battery life rated 20-25 hours of use.

So my conclusion is if you need an efficient method to calculate temperature without the hassle of touching then Actron CP7875 is your best PocketTherm Infrared Thermometer. Because it utilises infrared to help you reach the surface so you don’t need to touch it. It’s also a very convenient and lightweight gadget to carry in your pocket.
